Hybrid caravans are really popular right now because they offer a nice middle ground between a camper trailer and a full caravan.
You get a more compact size, better off-road capability, and often a lower weight than a traditional caravan.
But finding a lightweight hybrid isn't always easy.
So I used the Australian RV Directory, filtered more than 3,500 caravans down to just hybrid caravans, and then sorted them by tare weight to see what floated to the top.
What I found was a great mix of designs. Some use external ensuite tents, some have very clever internal bathroom solutions, and one of them even manages to squeeze in a full internal ensuite while still weighing under 1.5 tonnes tare.
The lightest hybrid I found was the Vista RV Crossover.

With a tare weight of just 1,300 kilograms, an ATM of 1,980 kilograms and a total length of 5.3 metres, it's remarkably light for a hybrid-style setup.
What's particularly interesting about the Crossover is how flexible the interior is. The lower half of the bed converts into a dinette, allowing the space to serve multiple purposes without adding extra weight.

For bathroom facilities, Vista has gone with an external ensuite tent setup, which helps keep weight and complexity down.
It's also Australian made, which will appeal to buyers looking for local manufacturing.

Moving slightly heavier to 1,340 kilograms tare is the FSC Off Road DN5.

This Australian-made hybrid has an ATM of 2,200 kilograms and starts from around $122,500.
What stands out here though, isn’t the weight. It’s the bathroom.
Instead of dedicating a permanent section of the camper to a bathroom, FSC has designed a system where the bench seat converts into a bathroom space when needed.

It's one of the more creative solutions I've seen in this category and shows just how much innovation manufacturers are putting into lightweight hybrids.

Next up is a van with one of the best names on the list: the Combat Wombat from Trailblazers RV.

At 1,400 kilograms tare, it remains impressively light, especially considering its ATM of 2,800 kgs.
That gives buyers a substantial payload capacity compared with some of the other lightweight options.
The Combat Wombat is Australian made and custom built, but a unique feature is the slide-out kitchen pod mounted on the front of the van.

For bathroom facilities, Trailblazers uses an internal porta-potti along with an external shower setup.
It's a very different approach from the previous vans we've looked at and shows there isn't one single formula for building a lightweight hybrid.

ATM: 2800kg

The Scout-X from Stoney Creek Campers comes in at 1,410 kgs tare and has one of the lowest ATMs we've seen so far… which of course means quite a limited payload.

At 5.2m long, it's also one of the most compact hybrids in this group.
What makes the Scout-X unique is its family-friendly sleeping arrangement.
In addition to the main sleeping area, buyers can option a bunk above the bed, allowing accommodation for up to four people.
That's quite unusual in a lightweight hybrid of this size.

There's no internal bathroom, but for families prioritising sleeping capacity and low weight, that may be a trade-off worth considering.

Australian Off Road has long been known for building premium off-road campers, and the Odyssey Signature continues that tradition.

At 1,440kg tare and 2,300kg ATM, it remains comfortably among the lightest hybrids I found.
And it has a unique bathroom design.
Rather than dedicating a fixed section of the camper to a bathroom, the toilet slides out from a cabinet, and the shower area is created using an enclosure system and curtain.

It's another example of manufacturers getting creative with space management.

The Skye RV 9-00 comes in at 1,450kg tare and 2,400kg ATM.

There’s very little information available online about this camper, in fact, there are only a couple of images available on the manufacturer's website.
But one feature that did stand out was the ensuite arrangement.
Like several others on this list, it uses an external ensuite tent, but there's a direct access door from inside the camper into the ensuite area.

It's a simple idea, but one that could make life considerably easier during bad weather.

Also weighing 1,450kg tare is the MDC Forte 9+.
This is one of the shortest hybrids on the list at just 4.6m overall length.

It's also one of the most affordable, with pricing starting from around $35,000.
That's significantly less than many of the other hybrids we've looked at today.
The Forte 9+ uses an external ensuite tent and includes a 270-degree free-standing awning, giving buyers plenty of outdoor living space.

For anyone entering the hybrid market on a tighter budget, this could be one of the more interesting options to investigate.

The final hybrid I want to show you also happens to be the most expensive.

The Tekton SVX-4 Series weighs 1,480 kg tare and is priced from around $168,990.
What makes this model stand out is that it achieves that weight while featuring a monocoque composite body and a genuine internal ensuite with a combined shower and toilet.
That's a very different proposition from many of the lightweight hybrids we've looked at in this article.
Rather than minimising facilities to reduce weight, Tekton has focused on advanced construction methods and premium materials.

It's an interesting reminder that lightweight doesn't always mean basic.
Sometimes it simply means a different engineering approach.

What surprised me most about this search was how many different paths manufacturers have taken to achieve a lightweight hybrid.
Some use external ensuites.
Some use clever convertible bathrooms.
Some prioritise payload.
Others focus on advanced construction materials.
And these eight models are only a small sample of what I found.
If you're looking for a lightweight hybrid with your own specific requirements, whether that's a particular ATM, sleeping capacity, bathroom setup or budget, that's exactly the sort of search the Australian RV Directory was built for.
